A few years after Facebook has deployed end-to-end encryption for text-based cats, a welcome update: End-to-end encrypted video calls. With this new feature, users can participate in more secure calls on Facebook Messenger, giving them an alternative to WhatsApp and other similar platforms. Facebook has also added a new Messenger text feature for encrypted users and providing an overview of what it then has in the pipeline.
In addition to the new end-to-end encrypted call feature, Facebook Messenger has also been updated to give users more control over the disappearing message function. As for more privacy centered email applications, users who turn on the end-to-end encrypted email function can also allow disappearance messages.
In the future, users can now choose five seconds to 24 hours for the disappearance of messages, ensuring that they do not hang in the discussion longer than necessary. Users can expect other new features in Messenger related to its end-to-end encryption option, including the possible addition of end-to-end encrypted group calls and video discussions in the application.
According to Facebook, some users can access this new capacity over the next two weeks, although the company did not say how many people will be included in this test and when it comes to more generally. Some Instagram users will also see a new feature as part of a test.
Facebook says Instagram users will eventually opt in end-to-end encryption for DMS. Some adult users of “Some countries” already have access to this feature similar to the option found in Messenger. Once again, no details on the more widespread availability has been provided.
